Laser Gum Treatment

For Your Unhealthy Gums

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. Gum disease has two primary stages. If diagnosed and treated in the first stage, the condition can be reversed and tooth loss can usually be prevented. In order to prevent gum disease, practice good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for cleanings and check-ups twice a year.

If gum disease is detected during your visit, we will instruct you on steps regarding improved home care and recommend specialized treatment options in our office to eliminate the disease.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a condition which affects the gums of your teeth which if left alone will result in teeth being pulled out after a few months.

At Eternal Smiles Dental Centre, our dentist has treated many patients with gum disease.  It is a serious infection that affects the tissues that surround the teeth: the gums, but most importantly the bone that supports the teeth.

The good news is we can help you as we did with Jane, Deepa and Alan.

Laser Gum Treatments

We use lasers to help your gums improve.  We have found this to reduce the time your gums take to heal.  The bad bacteria are killed much faster when we use lasers for so many of our patients.

Gingivitis – Early Stage of Gum Disease

This stage only affects the soft tissue of the gums, and the patient may not experience any discomfort. Although the symptoms may be very mild, it is important to diagnose gum disease in this early stage before it progresses to periodontitis.

Symptoms of Gingivitis may include:

  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath or a metallic taste in the mouth
  • Receding gums
  • Increasing spaces between teeth

Periodontitis – The next Stage of Gum Disease

Without regular dental visits, symptoms may not be noticed until moderate periodontitis is present.

Healthy Gums

Firm, pink, gums attached to the teeth and supported by firm dense bone are the indicators of healthy gums and teeth that have the strong support they need.

A build-up of bacteria causes Gingivitis. In its early stages, inflammation around the gums is observable, with gum tissues appearing red and swollen. Gums that are easily irritated or that bleed during tooth brushing indicate the presence of Gingivitis. Removal of the plaque buildup is necessary to prevent the development of gum disease.

Early Periodontitis Illustration

Early Periodontitis

As the gums become more inflamed, they start to pull away from the teeth, forming spaces known as periodontal “pockets.” Food, bacteria, and plaque begin to collect in the pockets, leading to infection. The surrounding bone becomes damaged both by bacterial toxins and by the immune system’s response to infection.

Moderate Periodontitis Illustration

Moderate Periodontitis

The symptoms of periodontitis become more severe as inflammation spreads, and some discomfort may occur. More supporting bone is lost, teeth loosen, and the gums recede further.

Advanced Periodontitis Illustration

Advanced Periodontitis

A major cause of tooth loss in adults, advanced periodontitis is marked by painful abscesses that are the result of the infection spreading beneath the gums.

Laser Gum Treatment

During moderate and severe gum disease (called moderate or severe periodontitis) the bacteria peals back the gum seal around the tooth. They start to attack the bone foundation and gum recession starts to occur. The reason for this is because the bone sets the tone for the soft gum tissue. Also, some teeth are more susceptible to gum disease and we will examine this for you.

Gum Problems What Do They Look Like ?

Redness, swelling and tendency of the gums for bleeding. However these symptoms are usually “covered”, in smokers due to the effect of smoking to the soft tissues.

Bad breath (breath malodor). One of the main complains of patients with periodontal disease is bad breath. People who believe that they have bad breath can adopt avoidance patterns and have psychological problems. Findings from many investigations documented that the majority of cases with malodor relate to the oral cavity.

One should ask for dental laser gums treatment if you have bleeding gums.

Receding Gums is due to bone loss, there is a retraction of the gums because they lose their support underneath from the bone. When the gums start to be infected by bad bacteria then the good bacteria have got no chance of winning, until you have our treatment.

How Our Laser Treatment Will Save You Money in the Long Term

Our policy at Eternal Smiles Dental Centre is to save the teeth you have by treating the gums that have become infected and strengthening the bone tissue in the mouth.

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease and choose to leave your mouth untreated, losing your teeth will be very likely.

When this happens, replacing your natural teeth with implants and dentures will be substantially more expensive than embarking on this treatment whilst your teeth can still be saved.

There are now scientific innovations that effectively treat Periodontal Disease which we use in our practice.

Other Problems - Severe Periodontitis

Tooth mobility. There can be different reasons for tooth mobility. One of the most common reasons is periodontal disease. Obviously, since a large amount of the bone is destroyed, the support of the teeth is decreased. This is advanced gum disease.

Tooth migration. You may notice that there is an increasing gap between your front teeth and that your teeth have changed the position that they originally had. Tooth migration happens due to the large loss of the supporting tissues of the teeth.

Periodontal Treatment

Traditional gum surgery involves incisions and sutures, often leaving visible changes to your smile. Now, with laser technology, there is a minimally invasive option that leaves your gum tissue uncut and unscarred.

Laser periodontal therapy uses a small laser fibre, only as wide as three human hairs, to target bacteria and infected tissue, while not affecting healthy tissue. There is no bleeding or stitches because no incisions are made.
